KANDOS: WAYOUT Artspace presents Abstract Assemblies: A Regional Dialogue Through Form, a group exhibition that brings together non-objective and geometric abstraction works by regional artists, alongside drawings and wall works by respected conceptual artist Ian Milliss.
Ian Milliss, who lives in Lithgow, is recognized as one of Australia’s pioneering conceptual artists. His participatory works of the early 1970s evolved into a practice founded on the belief that an artist’s role is to drive cultural change rather than produce content solely for the art industry.
Opening on Saturday, 4 October at 4pm, this exhibition creates a necessary platform for dialogue and appreciation of abstraction—offering visibility to artists from Kandos, Capertee, Maitland, Sofala and Yetholm, who often work in isolation or remain under the radar. With so many diverse approaches, the exhibition highlights the enduring relevance and innovation within the genre of abstraction.
Curated by Kandos artist Gabrielle Bates, the exhibition also features artworks by Maralyn Bennett, Silas Clifford-Smith, Leo Cremonse, Rachel Hannan, Stephen Hobbs, Jenny More, Cate McCarthy, Greg Hill, Georgina Pollard, and Peter Swain.
Visitors and community are warmly invited to WAYOUT Artspace to explore the intersections of form, process, and artistic expression in regional abstraction today.
WAYOUT Artspace is open to the public on Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday from 10am to 2pm and is located at 71 Angus Avenue, Kandos. The exhibition runs until 16 November 2025.
