Bathurst Heritage Matters Inc. and Bathurst Regional Council are proud to unveil ‘The Story of Bathurst,’ an immersive historical experience that brings the region’s rich heritage to life through a curated network of signage in the heritage heart of our city.
Mayor Cr Robert Taylor said the project represents the deep connection our community has with its past.
“Developed through years of dedicated research and hundreds of hours of volunteer input, this project has been led by respected heritage advocates Sandy Bathgate of Bathurst Heritage Matters and Fran White of the Bathurst & District Branch, National Trust of Australia. Their work has resulted in a compelling and powerful storytelling experience. More than just a series of signs, The Story of Bathurst brings the region’s history to the surface in a meaningful and accessible way. Bathurst has such a rich and layered past, and this project ensures those stories are shared and preserved,” commented the Mayor.
The project includes a free brochure with a map, and an interactive website accessed through QR codes on each of the 14 panels. Each signage panel contains a copy of an original artwork pertaining to its part of The Story, many of which are by local artists.
The initiative also pays tribute to the late historian Dr Robin McLachlan, whose Heritage Walk winds through the interior of The Town Square highlighting a number of heritage features. Mayor Taylor noted that Robin’s extensive research and passion for Bathurst’s early settlement history shaped many local heritage projects in the region.
“Dr McLachlan’s legacy is also woven throughout this work. His vision to tell The Story of Bathurst throughout town has now been realised by friends and colleagues who cared deeply about continuing what he began,” said Mayor Taylor.
Conceived, designed, produced and financed by Community group Bathurst Heritage Matters Inc. and supported through Council’s Heritage Assistance Fund small grants program, the project stands as a testament to community collaboration and the enduring value of local history.
Make sure to keep an eye out for this signage telling The Story of Bathurst as you explore our region.
