Cowra’s Festival of International Understanding focus’ on popular Italy – the second time since 1969!

The program for the 2024 Cowra Festival of International Understanding is coming together with Italy the guest nation for this year’s event – the second time since 1969! A popular choice, Italy is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, delectable cuisine, and vibrant traditions.  No doubt, Italy will captivate the hearts of both locals and travellers alike.

The Festival, now in its 59th year, is less than a month away, and scheduled to take place from March 22 to March 24, 2024, in Cowra, NSW.

Lisa Flanagan, the festival coordinator, has been busy organising details for what promises to be a very popular three days in Cowra.  She says “we have been extremely busy … from welcoming our major sponsor Club Cowra and securing support from Antonio’s Wines, to confirming event locations and entertainment – there has been a lot going on,” and “If you are still keen to get involved or sponsor the festival, please don’t hesitate to reach out as it’s not too late!”

In the weeks leading up to the festival, 13 Youth Ambassadors will also be visiting Canberra and the Italian Embassy before the festival in a bid to learn more about Italian culture as well as promote the event. Those ambassadors are Charlie Graham, Mackay Sullivan, Maddie Tremble, Cohan Harden, Laura Brice, Lucas Bryant, Imogen McCormick, Tobie Hubber, Maddi Densmore, Beth Kollas, Henry Anderson, Abby Slattery and Addison Skinner.

The Festival originated in the mid-1960’s and is a community-based event focusing on Cowra’s unique place as a home of reconciliation. With Cowra becoming the site of Australia’s World Peace Bell, the celebration’s name was changed to the ‘Festival of International Understanding’.

With three days of entertainment, check out the street parade on the 23 March, window displays, food, arts and crafts, free concert and fireworks and book in for the Trivia Night on the 21 March, the Pizza Eating Competition on 23 March, and Festa Italiana Opening Dinner on 22 March.
