From Mid-Western Regional Council 17/8/26
Mudgee Arts Precinct is proud to present A Year in Mudgee, a new exhibition by local artist Sam Paine, celebrating the changing landscapes and seasons of the Mid-Western Region.
A well-known member of the local community, Paine has spent more than 20 years capturing the distinctive character of the region through paint.
Following the changing seasons across a single year, A Year in Mudgee reflects the landscapes that define life in the Mid-Western Region – from the cliffs of the Capertee Valley to the farms around Gulgong, from the grapevines beneath Mount Frome to the dirt roads around Eurunderee. Featuring familiar roads, paddocks and landmarks, the exhibition invites visitors to see these everyday places through fresh eyes.
Born and raised in Mudgee, Paine brings a deeply personal connection to his subject matter. Working in oils with palette knives, he creates expressive landscapes characterised by bold colour, simplified forms and richly textured surfaces. His paintings are not simply records of place; they are reflections of memory, belonging, community and a lifelong relationship with the country that surrounds Mudgee.
“These are places we know well – roads we travel regularly, landscapes that hold memories of people, seasons and moments in time,” Paine said.
“This exhibition reflects both a single year in the Mudgee Region and a lifetime spent living and painting here.”
A Year in Mudgee is a celebration of place, inviting visitors to pause and appreciate the beauty of the landscapes that shape everyday life in the Mid-Western Region.
The exhibition will be on display at Mudgee Arts Precinct from Friday, 25 September until 22 November. Mudgee Arts Precinct is open seven days a week from 9am to 5pm. Admission is free.
