Inmate art’s fiery origins

Lithgow Correctional Centre staff and inmates have collaborated in the aftermath of the Gosper’s Mountain bushfire to create a unique sculpture series.

The sculptures are displayed on the mountainside next to the prison and were created from lengths of charred, scrap barbed wire from fences destroyed by the December 2019 fire.

Overseer Steven Redman gathered the wire and with the help of inmates, recycled it into three, tree-like sculptures that stand in memory of the blaze.
