This year’s Lithgow Arts Trail (Sat 1 & Sun 2 Nov) offers a special and deeply meaningful opportunity to step inside the workspace of one of Lithgow’s most influential artists — Bob Cunningham.
Bob was the first contemporary artist to work out of the Lithgow Pottery site, taking over the former pattern store in 1970. Over the next four decades, he transformed it into a cultural hub, hosting exhibitions, supporting fellow artists, teaching and helping shape the creative identity of the region.
Working across painting, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture, Bob was remarkably prolific — producing tens of thousands of works over his lifetime. He gathered clay from local hills, made glazes from ashes, rocks, and salt, and even built his own potter’s wheel and workshop spaces by hand.
Following his recent passing, this will be the last chance to visit his studio and experience his life’s work — a remarkable collection of pottery and paintings displayed within the spaces he built himself.
It’s a rare glimpse into the world of an artist who dedicated his life to creativity, community, and the landscape of Lithgow.
