New public art alert: Saving Our Species Mural, Bathurst

Wander along the Nevil Barlow pathway along the Wambuul Macquarie River in Bathurst (behind Bathurst Showground) and you’ll see this brand new 24m long work by Jessica Ann Leffley @birdgirlcreations

Jessica says:

“Each panel features a threatened species local to the Bathurst region and surrounds; (left to right) Bathurst Grassland Earless Dragon, Booroolong Frog, Granite Zieria and the Purple Copper Butterfly. If you look closely, you’ll see some important ecological details, too!

“The Purple Copper Butterfly and its caterpillars living in symbiosis with the Native Blackthorn bush and an attendant ant (Anonychomyrma itinerans).

“The delicate flowers of Granite Zieria, whose petals are less than 3mm long in real life.

“The Booroolong Frog hanging out in its preferred habitat of streams bordered by cobbles and bedrock
and my personal favourite, Bathurst Earless Grassland Dragon and its native grassland habitat containing everlasting daisies, kangaroo grass, wolf spider burrows, and prey items like crickets.

“Threatened species throughout the region need the support of the community, including through ‘citizen science’, where members of the public can report sightings of flora and fauna. This invaluable information improves our understanding of threatened species and helps us reach conservation goals. I encourage everyone to head to www.environment.nsw.gov.au where there’s STACKS of information on these incredible species and how we can protect them. #savingourspecies
